WHY I STARTED FUELED HEALTH
Hi, I'm Sara, a board-certified Nurse Practitioner, Functional Nutrition Practitioner, and lifelong athlete.
Movement and performance have always been part of my life. I earned a degree in Exercise Science, worked as a personal trainer and firefighter/paramedic, and eventually became a nurse practitioner in emergency medicine. But across every role, I kept seeing the same problem.
Athletes and high-performers were training hard, following the rules, doing "all the right things" and still struggling. Poor recovery. Energy crashes. Plateaued performance. Hormonal chaos. Brain fog. Weight that wouldn't budge despite eating less and training more.
They were told to train harder, eat less, be more disciplined, or accept that "this is just aging" or "part of being an athlete.
But I knew something else was going on.
After 20 years in the ER, I'd seen where metabolic dysfunction leads- heart attacks at 45, diabetic crises in seemingly healthy people, strokes in athletes who "did everything right." I didn't want that for myself or my clients.
So I went back to school for my Master's in Integrative & Functional Nutrition to understand what conventional medicine was missing.
And here's what I discovered:
Fatigue, poor recovery, weight struggles, hormonal imbalances, brain fog, anxiety, and performance plateaus aren't separate problems. They share the same root cause - metabolic and mitochondrial dysfunction.
WHY THE METABOLIC ROOT CAUSE APPROACH?
Research from sports science labs, metabolic health institutes, and performance nutrition studies shows that when your metabolism isn't working optimally—when blood sugar is dysregulated, when you're chronically underfueling, when stress hormones are out of balance, when mitochondria aren't producing energy efficiently—it doesn't just affect one system.
